Walsall to Birmingham Airport: Prices, Journey Time and What to Expect

Birmingham Airport is the closest major airport to Walsall, and for most people it is the easiest one to reach. That said, the journey is not quite as simple as the map makes it look, and the number of people who arrive later than they planned is higher than it should be. Here is everything worth knowing before you travel.

How long does it actually take?

The straight answer is between 30 and 40 minutes from most Walsall postcodes, covering roughly 18 to 20 miles depending on where you start. Bloxwich and Pelsall sit at the longer end. Streetly and Aldridge are closer to half an hour.

That is the answer for a quiet road. The honest answer is that the time of day matters more than the distance does.

Leaving between 7am and 9.30am on a weekday, the M6 through the Bescot and Junction 7 stretch can add 20 minutes without much warning. The same is true of the 4pm to 6.30pm window. Between 10pm and 5am the same journey regularly runs in under 28 minutes.

What does a transfer cost?

Prices depend on vehicle size rather than on how busy we are. There is no surge pricing, and the figure quoted online is the figure you pay.

Those prices include the airport drop off charge, so there is nothing to pay at the barrier and no surprise added on afterwards.

Which route will the driver take?

There are two sensible options and the right one changes through the day.

The M6 route runs down through Junction 6 at Spaghetti Junction and onto the A45. It is the quickest when the motorway is flowing, which generally means outside peak hours.

The A34 and A38 route through Perry Barr is longer on paper but far more predictable when the M6 is struggling. Drivers who know the area well will switch to this without being asked.

There is also the M6 Toll for journeys coming from the northern side of Walsall. It costs money but on a bad morning it can save 25 minutes, and we absorb that rather than passing it on mid journey.

Drop off at Birmingham Airport

The drop off area sits directly outside the terminal and is a short covered walk to check in. Vehicles get a limited free period before charges apply, which is ample for getting bags out of the boot but not for a long goodbye.

If you are travelling with someone who needs more time, the multi storey car park next door gives you a longer window and the walk is only a couple of minutes further.

Coming back the other way

Arrivals are where a transfer earns its money. Your flight number is logged when you book and monitored from takeoff, so if you land 40 minutes late nobody needs to phone anybody. The driver already knows.

Standard practice is 45 minutes of free waiting time from the moment your flight touches down on an international arrival, which covers passport control and baggage reclaim on a normal day.

Meet and greet is available if you would rather be met inside the terminal with a name board, which is worth it if you are travelling with children or a lot of luggage.

Getting the timing right

The standard advice for Birmingham Airport is two hours before a short haul departure and three hours for long haul. Work backwards from that and add the journey time.

For a 6am flight from Walsall, that means being at the airport by 4am, so a pick up around 3.20am. Early, but the roads are empty and it is a fast run.

Summer holidays and half term change this. Security queues in late July can stretch well beyond anything you see in February, and it is worth adding half an hour to be comfortable.
